It is significant that since 1949 Vantage Press has published the books of
thousands of new writers. Among them are physicians, teachers, members of
the clergy, journalists, farmers, housewives, business executives, and
others in every walk of life. Some of them have written important works. All
of them, in our opinion, deserved an audience.
Sales of the average Vantage Press book vary widely. Some books sell a few
hundred copies or less; some, a few thousand copies; a handful sell even
more. By its very nature, book publishing is a hazardous business, and the
author who pays to publish his work should weigh the risks involved.
Despite this, many authors are aware that the rewards of subsidy publication
are usually reckoned not in financial terms, but in personal satisfaction,
increased prestige, broader job and career opportunities, and greater
recognition and respect from friends and business associates.
